Success for Stoney players in Badminton

Double medal success for Jodie
Double medal success for Jodie

Double medal success was had by Stonehaven player Jodie Harris in the Midland Junior Championships U15s category held in Grangemouth.

Jodie, who is still under 14 played in all three disciplines, singles, level and mixed doubles.

Seeded fourth Jodie had a great day winning both the singles and girl’s doubles beating players seeded above her in the process. She just missed out on the mixed doubles after a very close 3 sets match to the eventual runners up. Jodie has now moved up to 2nd in her age group in the Scottish singles rankings.

The badminton season is now in full swing with NE players attending the Glasgow School of Sport U11 and U13. In the U11s Daniel Harris from Stonehaven had a great day finishing runner up in both the singles and level doubles with both matches being very close. Daniel has now achieved the ranking of 2nd in Scotland in his age group for singles.

In the U13s Connor McRobbie and Nathan MacPherson both from Stonehaven reached the semi-final of the doubles with both boys also playing well in the singles. Nathan and Connor are seeded 4th and 5th respectively and have both had a great start to the season. Other NE players competing well over the weekend were Abby Strachan and Lyndsey Ireland who partnered each other to reach 3rd in the girl’s doubles with Lyndsey also coming 3rd in the girl’s singles.

In the U19s age group NE’s Nick Darcy Evans came up against his own U17 doubles partner in the first round of the U19 singles but came through some really tough matches with long rallies to take second place overall. It was unfortunate, due to sever cramps, Nick had to withdraw from the level doubles with his partner Sam Muir from Stonehaven. In the girls U19 Singles Eilidh Mitchell, who is currently still U16, played competitively and in doing so gained good experience as she was also faced with some long testing matches against older opponents.

North East Badminton Secondary Singles League is also in full swing and over the coming weeks is being held in both Banchory Academy and Sports Centre. The age groups are U14, U16 and U19, for both boys and girls and is well supported with players travelling to compete from as far North as Elgin and as far South as Mearns.

The NE Primary School Tournament date has been set for the October 4 and will be held at Portlethen Academy.

Along with the start of the competitive season various badminton classes and sessions for juniors and adults are all underway. Anyone interested in more information to contact Sports Development Officer: Joan Prieur 01569 768352 or joan.prieur@aberdeenshire.gov.uk
