Almost 60 athletic youngsters participated in Stonehaven Gymnastics Club’s annual competition at the town’s leisure centre.

The morning session saw the beginners compete within their age groups on two pieces of apparatus, floor and vault.

For some of the under-eights this was their first competition. Medals were awarded by age group, for each piece of apparatus, and overall winners.

The overall winners were determined by their combined scores for floor and vault. In addition, every gymnast received a gold, silver or bronze certificate in recognition of their combined scores achieved on the day.

The winners in each of the beginner age groups were Chloe Taylor (Under 8), Iona McArdle (8/9 years), Isla Stevenson (10/11 years) and Tali Noble (12+ years).

The overall beginner shield is awarded to the gymnast with the highest combined score of the morning session. This year’s overall beginner champion is Iona McArdle.

In the afternoon, the intermediate gymnasts competed on four pieces of apparatus, floor, vault, uneven bars and beam. The intermediate floor routines are performed to music. Some of the more experienced beginners also had the opportunity to compete on the uneven bars and beam. Again, medals were awarded for each piece and overall by age group, with graded certificates for everyone who took part.

The winners in each of the intermediate age groups were Emily Winton (8/9 years), Glenn Masson (10/11 years), Catherine Wotherspoon (12+ years) and Bethany Bruce (14+ years).

The club champion shield is awarded to the intermediate gymnast with the highest combined score from the four pieces of apparatus. The Club Champion 2014 is Bethany Bruce who won gold on every piece.

Head coach Frances said: “All the coaches were very pleased with the girls’ performance. They got the opportunity to show the progress they have made over the past year. The club would like to thank all the helpers involved in the run up and on the day. It would not be possible without them. The day was a great success.”

The club will be holding trials later in the year for a limited number of places. If you would like to register your interest, please email the club at stonehavengymclub@hotmail.co.uk
