Three teams through to district finals

Last Thursday proved to be a fantastic night for the Stonehaven Club with three teams making it through to this week’s Bowls Scotland District finals at Kittybrewster BC.

The Seniors Rink of Bob Harrison/Joe Aitken/Steve Gellatly and Jim Roddie had a pretty straightforward win in the afternoon against Northern BC and in the evening, after being eight shots to nil down after three ends, Alister McIntosh and Jim Roddie fought back to win by five shots.

The closest and most exciting game was at Stonehaven in the singles semi-final when Graeme Penny playing Kevin Pirie (Whitehall BC) down by two shots and game against him produced a tremendous bowl to trail the jack and lie the single shot he needed for a 21 to 19 shot win.

What a tremendous finish there will be to the Area County League as with only one round to go there are six teams who can conceivably grab the two places available in the quarter finals.

Despite last Saturday’s reverse against Northern Counties, Aberdeen and Kincardineshire still hold top place on shot difference but need to win the ‘local derby’ against Bon Accord at Rothienorman this Saturday to have chance of reaching the last eight.

In the Barclay Harvey Competition last Monday Stonehaven were beaten on an extra end by Portlethen to save themselves the long journey to Braemar for this week’s final. With one rink well up and the other a similar amount down the players had to contest a further end each to determine the winner and although Graeme Penny’s rink counted a single shot it wasn’t enough to get a final place which went to Portlethen by virtue of gaining two shots on the other match.

The Stonehaven Past Presidents won all four rinks against Aberdeen Past Presidents on Sunday to win overall by 23 shots. Individual rink scores were (Stonehaven rinks first)-

S. Gellatly…12 S. Robison…10

R. Jenkin…16 A. Garner…14

G. Penny…18 B. Will…14

F. Tattersall…21 D. Campbell…6

The Senior’s team delivered another fine win away to Seafield BC last Wednesday by 62 shots to 50.

Individual rink scores were (Stonehaven skips first)-

G. Buchan…9 G. Robertson…19

R. Smith…13 E. Davidson…12

R. Harrison…17 R. Findlay…12

M. Nevill…23 J. Gray…7

At the Recreation Grounds on Saturday Stonehaven played a friendly match against Polmuir BC and thanks to wins in teams skipped by Bruce Corstorphine and Roger Smith the home team won by 18 shots.
