A Stonehaven-based martial arts club were triumphant at the World Kickboxing Chamnpionships by taking home two gold medals and three bronze.

Malcolm Evans and 10 of his students from the Lion’s Den Martial Arts Academy competed for Scotland at the world competition in Florida, USA.

Over 2000 combatants attended the event from 20 different countries.

Winning the gold medals were Shaunileigh Malone and Findlay Wright. The three bronze medallists were Garth Hendry, head instructor and owner of the Lion’s Den Martial Arts Academy Malcolm Evans, and his wife Nicola Evans.

Mr Evans said: “It was good even getting out there. It was a fantastic time to be there and represent Scotland.

“All the hard work in training has paid off.”

He added that the club will not rest on its laurels after the tournament and is heading straight back to training. In the new year they will be heading to Germany to compete in a European competition, and that will be followed by the Watford Open Nationals. The Watford competition will have a personal edge for Mr Evans as he will compete against the person who knocked him in the semi-final in the recent World Championship.
