PROMOTION AND CUP FOR MEARNS UNITED

MEARNS United are celebrating a superb season in which they won a second successive promotion and lifted the Barclay Cook Cup.

In only their second season in the Aberdeenshire Amateur ranks, United stormed to second place in Division Two East and will play Division One football next season.

Mearns won seven times in the league at home, scoring ten against Muggiemoss Youth, seven against Potterton and Fintray Thistle and six against Mintlaw.

Fixture confusion led to them losing the points at home to champions Ellon Amateurs without playing and the only other teams to win at Fettercairn were Halliburton, Bankhead and Grammar FP.

United had an even better away record, winning eight times on their travels and only losing twice.

They scored an incredible 12 goals at Alford, six at Mintlaw and chalked up tallies of five at Don Athletic, BSFC and Fintray.

The only teams to beat Mearns away from home were Ellon, to effectively clinch the title and Muggiemoss Youth, who took revenge for losing ten in the first meeting between the clubs.

The Mearns league record was: Ellon Lcon (h) L0-1 (a); Halliburton L2-3 (h) W2-1 (a); Ferryhill D1-1 (h) W3-2 (a); Continental W2-1 (h) D2-2 (a); Muggiemoss W10-1 (h) L2-3 (a); Bankhead L1-3 (h) D2-2 (a); Mintlaw W6-0 (h) W6-1 (a).

Grammar FP L0-2 (h) D1-1 (a); Potterton W7-2 (h) W3-2 (a); Don Athletic D1-1 (h) W5-0 (a); BSFC W4-0 (h) W5-1 (a); Fintray Th W7-3 (h) W5-2 (a); Alford W3-1 (h) W12-1 (a).

Mearns had a home record of W7 D2 L4 F44 A18 Pts23 and and away record of W8 D3 L2 F48 A19 Pts27 for an overall W15 D5 L6 F94 A37 Pts50.

In their march to glory in the Barclay Cook Cup, Mearns beat Continental 5-4, Grammar FP 3-0 and Potterton 3-1 in the semi-final, before trouncing Bankhead 5-0 in the final.

Mearns might actually have won another cup. In the Dickie Trophy, contested by all the teams in Divisions Two and Three, they beat Westhill 2-1 in round two and Alford 3-0 in round three before losing out 3-4 to the eventual winners, Rattray's X1, in the quarter-final.

In the Scottish Cup they beat US Glendale and Trophies International, before losing to a strong Drumchapel in the third round.

In the AFC Trophy they lost to West End and in the North of Scotland Cup, US Glendale took some revenge for the Scottish Cup by knocking Mearns out.

Mearns scored 35 goals in cup competition, making their total for the season a massive 127.

Craig Irvine was top scorer by a big margin, scoring 32 goals, 21 in the league and 11 in the cups. Closest to him were Ryan Stewart and Simon Horner with 17 and Stevie Law with 12.

Other totals were Beel nine, Ramage seven, White six, Duncan and Crabb five, Ross and Scott with four, Legg with two and Lawson, Black, Bruce and Grant all with one. There were three own-goals.

There were seven Mearns hat-tricks during the season, all in the league.

Irvine scored three against Fintray, Potterton and Don Athletic and Horner did likewise against Potterton and Alford. Beel scored his treble against Muggiemoss and Stewart notched his against Mintlaw.
