Stonehaven 3 Hermes 1
Stonehaven secured their place in the 3rd round of the North Regional Cup with a 3-1 win at home to Hermes on Saturday.
The game kicked off with conditions underfoot very heavy due to the heavy rainfall in the days prior to the game and the conditions definitely played their part over the course of the match.
The first half started with the visitors having the better chances however Michael Smith was equal to anything they had to offer and it was Stonehaven who took the lead.
The ball was played across to the left and after looking up David Glass sent in what initially looked like a cross. The angle of the ball deceived Irvine and it landed in the back of the net.
Stonehaven did not rest on their laurels and grabbed a second soon after. Glass was again involved, turning provider as his inch perfect left foot cross was headed home by Martin Shand.
Hermes didn’t give up however and were awarded a penalty soon after when Macklin went down somewhat softly in the box. Scott McKay took on the responsibility but Michael Smith dived to his right to make an excellent save and keep his clean sheet intact.
It was 3-0 soon after when the ball was played into the box and fell to Shand who found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
Hermes came out fighting at the start of the second half looking to get themselves back into the tie and some slack marking allowed Gairns to pull a goal back within 5 minutes of the restart.
Soon after Michael Smith made a brilliant save to stop the ball crossing the line as Hermes pressed for a second.
it was a tricky second period for both sets of players as the pitch cut up more and more and the ball held up a lot more than it should due to the mud.
This affected Stonehaven more however as the penalty area at the Kop end was far worse than at the bottom end, and efforts from Shand and Ryan Stewart which would have hit the back of the net in normal circumstances had the power drained from them.
The game finished with Stonehaven safely through to the next round, where they will face opponents as yet unknown.
On Saturday, Stonehaven are away to Maud in the Superleague, kick-off 2.30pm.
