SHAPING UP FOR THE BALMORAL RUN

EDDIE IZZARD, Robson Green and Dave Gorman all achieved astounding feats of physical endurance in 2009 which tested their fitness and determination to the limit.

Whether it was running 43 marathons in 51 days, swimming around the United Kingdom or cycling the length of the country, all three invested the time to prepare their physical and mental capabilities for these challenges.

However, achieving challenging goals isn't reserved for celebrities, actors and stand-up comedians – we can all do more to improve our health and fitness, especially during Health Month in January 2010.

Why not set yourself a challenge in 2010 and sign up for Run Balmoral 2010 and start training?

Run Balmoral 2010 is regarded as one of the most scenic and challenging races in the sporting calendar.

Athletes can choose from 10K and 5K races over a course on the Queen's Balmoral Estate on Royal Deeside on Saturday April 24, 2010 at Balmoral, near Ballater in Aberdeenshire.

James Knowles, chairman of the Balmoral Road Races, said: "Although New Year resolutions might be a distant memory for some, signing up for Run Balmoral 2010 will give people the perfect reason to lace up their running shoes and work on their fitness.

"A lot of work goes into organising the races each year between Aberdeenshire Council's sports development team, Balmoral estate, sponsors and partners and they are to be commended for creating one of the premier races in Scotland.

"There are also fringe events to entertain visitors and runners and ensure people have a great day out. It's worth remembering that Run Balmoral attracts not only runners but spectators who sometimes choose to stay for longer so the event provides a welcome boost for tourism in Deeside."

Now in its thirteenth year, organisers are hoping for a record amount of entries to top last year's total of 4,000 runners.

Stena Drilling is sponsoring the Tartan 10K race and the first kilted runners over the finish line will win a special prize.

Teams of four are invited to take part in the ConocoPhillips 5K team challenge and organisers are keen to attract groups of runners from companies to take part in 2010, to help promote health in the workplace.

There will also be a dedicated, invitation 10k wheelchair race for athletes from around the United Kingdom, sponsored by Pihl (UK) Ltd. Wheelchair athlete Jason Gill won this for the second time in a row last year.

In addition to the adult races there are two for school-aged children: the MPH primary schools 1.5K run and the Active Schools Aberdeenshire sponsored 2.5K for secondary schools run.

Schools from Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray are encouraged to enter teams for the Aberdeen City and Shire Active Schools Challenge.

Last year's Active Schools Challenge was won by Chapel of Garioch and Banchory primary schools (small and large schools categories) and Aboyne and Mearns academies shared the Secondary Active Schools Challenge.

Northsound Cash for Kids is again the official charity of the event and plan to have a team taking part. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) will also be a beneficiary but entrants may also choose their own charity to support.

The event is also sponsored by Aberdeen City and Shire, Sangs and Pihl UK Ltd.

Entry into Balmoral Estate is free for competitors and spectators on the day.
