League Division One (East)
This was Athletic’s first league victory since the opening game of the season when the beat local rivals A.C. Mill Inn and a vital win it was after a seris of poor results.
The home side started brightly with O’Brien and Cordiner at the heart of most things and they should have had a penalty after 20 minutes when O’Brien was blatantly barged off the ball, however the referee ignored the Athletic appeals.
MacLeod should have put the home side ahead on the half hour mark, however he shot tamely at the keeper from 10 yards when it looked easier to score. Athletic finally when ahead just before the break and this time MACLEOD made no mistake, firing home from 12 yards.
Athletic could have increased their lead with a couple of efforts, however at the break they were still ahead by a single goal.
Half Time 1 - 0
Athletic’s problem this season has been failing to capitalise when on top so the new it was important to get another goal and this duly arrived when GELLATLY knocked the ball passed the Banchory keeper from close range after 50 minutes.
The home side put the game beyond doubt in the 65 minutes when GELLATLY volleyed in from 8 yards after excellent work by MacLeod down the right.
Banchory go a concilation goal with 10 minutes left with a well worked free kick, however Athletic ran out comfortable winners.
