Stonehaven fight back to win

Stonehaven 4 Longside 2

stonehaven collected three fine points at home to Longside in the Superleague on September 10 when they fought back from 2-0 down to win 4-2.

The game started off very open with both teams going forward at every opportunity. Longside were first to threaten, when Porter went on a great run and his powerful shot was tipped over the by Smith at full stretch.

After 15 minutes, a deep cross was headed clear by Croll, but his poor clearance went straight to the unmarked Campbell who slammed a powerful shot into the roof the next giving Smith no chance.

Minutes later Longside were two up. A deep cross from the right had the Hive defence in sixes and sevens. Pyper’s partial clearance saw the ball break kindly to Longside’s Cambell who sidefooted past Smith from six yards.

Pyper made a great run from full back position, and spit the Longside defence but some desperate defending saw the ball cleared for a corner. The keeper then pulled off a fine save from the resulting corner.

Horne fired in a great cross from a free kick on the left, but Cruickshank just failed to make contact at the far post.

Horne then sprung the Longside offside trap. He rounded the keeper but was forced wide and his shot from a tight angle went just wide of the near post.

A deep cross by Cruickshank found Glass wide on the right and his first time cross was headed behind for a corner. The resulting corner saw McCall tap home from less than a yard after 35 minutes. Hive pushed hard for the equaliser and Glass had a strike which went just over.

Horne then created another opening for himself but his shot lacked the power to trouble the Longside keeper.

Just on half-time the ball broke to Cruickshank and his shot was deflected past the Longside keeper to make it 2-2.

Some great play by Porter saw him skip past Pyper, his cross found Park on the right and his shot beat the advancing Smith, but went narrowly wide of the far post.

Stonehaven started the brighter side in the second half and Duncan saw his shot go just wide.

Minutes later Hive made the breakthrough. Great play by Horne saw him beat three defenders before laying the ball back to Glass whose powerful low shot beat the Longside keeper at his near post.

Hive broke again, and Horne opened up the Longside defence but failed to get his shot on target under pressure.

Longside kept trying to get back in the match, and Porter had a great run but lacked support and his cross cum shot was cleared off the line by L. Shand. Porter again carved out another opportunity. His cross was met by Dawton whose powerful header was saved well by Smith.

Longside were reduced to 10 men, when Dawton was given a straight red.

Horne then had a great chance to kill off Longside, but his powerful drive went just wide.

Beddie was booked for a high challenge on Cruickshank, Shand of Stonehaven was then booked for descent.

Stonehaven wrapped up the points when some great play by Horne saw his pass find L. Shand who slammed the ball into the net to make it 4-2 with five minutes to go.

Just before the end, L. Shand had another great chance but his shot went just wide.
