STONEHAVEN SWIMMER SELECTED FOR GB SQUAD
A TALENTED Stonehaven swimmer has been selected to represent Great Britain at a European competition on Sunday (June 13).
Mackie Academy pupil Pamela Beck has been named in the Great Britain World Class Potential Open Water Swim Squad which will compete in San Felice Circeo, Italy.
Pamela will compete in the 10,000m open water race for the European Open Water Swimming Cup, representing Great Britain for the first time.
The rising star, who swims for Stonehaven Swimming Club as part of the South Aberdeenshire Swimming (SAS) team, is delighted to have been selected for the squad.
Pamela, 15, is looking forward to jetting out to Italy this week where she hopes to maintain her impressive form after winning five overseas races in 2009.
She said: "I'm really pleased to have been selected for the squad to compete in such a major European race.
"I enjoy open water swimming and won two 5,000m open events in France and Belgium last year, but this will be my first 10,000m race so I'm really looking forward to it."
Pamela has been swimming in open water competitions for three years and has enjoyed success in a number of competitions, both in the United Kingdom and across Europe.
Swimming for the Scottish and North District Open Water Development Squads last year she won five of her races, four of which were open events for all ages.
After competing in Italy, Pamela will travel to Grimaud, France to train before returning to the United Kingdom to take part in the Great East Swim in Ipswich, England on June 19. She will then compete in the Scottish National Open Championships at Tollcross, Glasgow from June 22 to 27.
Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council's Education, Learning and Leisure Committee, Councillor Richard Stroud, said: "I would like to congratulate Pamela on her selection to compete for the European Open Water Swimming Cup.
"Hopefully all of the training which goes into becoming a competitive swimmer will pay off at the event."
Vice-chair of the committee Councillor Isobel Davidson, added: "This is fantastic news for Pamela and we wish her every success at the competition.
"Aberdeenshire has a number of talented athletes and we take great pride in their success at competitions around the country and beyond.
"The council supports young athletes as much as possible and their success is a tribute to the work done by our coaches and sports staff throughout the year."
