Six members of the Boydell Blackbelt Academies travelled to the 2012 Dutch Taekwondo Open in Eindhoven, along with their Instructor Mr Mark Boydell 5th degree as a coach.

The competition had over 550 competitors from all over Europe taking part, including past and present European and World Champions.

The competition consisted of two events, Sparring and Patterns. The categories were split by age and weight or height for juniors.

Tracey Smith, Adam Diouri and Greg Spark from Inverbervie, Stonehaven and Hillside respectively performed very well, narrowly missing out on the medals.

Jamie Smith (10 years old) of Inverbervie won two of his three fights earning a hard fought and well deserved Bronze medal. Jamie won his medal play-off nine points to one for a convincing victory.

Liam Bain (15 years old) of Hillside won a silver medal in the 58kg sparring division, losing an extremely close fought final against one of Holland’s up and coming stars. Liam received too many warnings which resulted in a two point deduction which heavily affected the outcome.

Perhaps the best result of the day was Katrina Carr (13 years old) of Stonehaven - who only promoted to 1st Degree Black Belt in November of last year - and won the Girls 1st Degree Black Belt Patterns division, beating in the final a very good competitor from Belgium.

Mark Boydell said: “I am extremely proud of my students who have travelled to Holland and gained this valuable experience. The hard work in training over the past few years is now starting to pay off at the higher level competitions.”

This competition is the ideal preparation for Academy black belts, Greg Spark, Liam Bain and Katrina Carr who will take part in the forthcoming Scotland selection competition for the European Championships, which will be held in Slovenia at the end of April.
