Three members of Aberdeenshire South Hockey Club were selected to represent North District at the annual Inter District Tournament at Peffermill, Edinburgh at the weekend. The three players were in the Under 16 Squad and faced the best players in their age category in Scotland.
Robbie Wallis, Jack Taylor and Mitchell Deighton are all pupils from Portlethen Academy.
Aberdeenshire South lost 10-3 at home to AAM Gordonains 4ths in their opening fixture.
This was not the start that the new club wanted and it showed that it is going to be a learning season as the team, with three senior players short due to work commitments, had an average age of 15 with only two players over the age of 20.
ASHC were three down in 12 minutes but pulled themselves back into the game and were constantly trying to breach the Gordonians defence with chances falling to Wallis, G McNab, T Randle and I Verstralen but Gordonians held out and at half-time the score still remained at 0-3.
The second half saw the continuation of ASHC in the Gordonians half but a breakaway saw Gordonians score to make it 4-0.
ASHC heads didn’t go down and a goal by McNab got them back into the game. This was quickly countered against by two counter-attacking goals from Gordonians.
Robbie Wallis then scored from a good move down the left and fired high into the net to make it 2-6 but again two goals from Gordonians pulled them away.
With five minutes to go Mitchell Deighton scored at the back post but with seconds left Gordonians finished the scoring to take the three points and a 10-3 win.
The next game is scheduled for Saturday September 29 with 1.30pm start at Portlethen Academy against Granite City Wanderers 4ths.
