YOUNGSTERS NET TOP SPOTS

FIVE young hopefuls from Aberdeenshire made the trip south to Wishaw Sports Centre for the Scottish Schools Badminton Union U14 age group singles badminton tournament.

They proved to be a formidable force, by scooping first, second and third place overall. The players - Matthew Duguid (U12), Cameron Pyper (U14), Mark Leith (U13), Jacob Reynolds (U14) and Sean Leith (U14) - were all from Mackie Academy in Stonehaven. With the exception of Cameron, who had a very close and hard-fought first round challenge match losing narrowly 24 – 22, 24 – 22, all progressed to the top section of their starting group. Based on recent form and current national rankings, Mark, Jacob and Sean were all poised to battle it out for glory in the top pool. After losing his first match Cameron easily won his remaining three matches, finishing in 37th place. Matthew won his challenge match with ease and continued in his winning ways, with victories in two out of his three following matches to secure him a 34th place finish, a great result for an U12. Jacob and Sean both won their initial challenge matches with relative ease whilst Mark was drawn against his doubles partner and current U13 number 1, Alex Dunn of Motherwell. As always a great match ensued with Mark losing the first game 21-16. Fortunes turned as he clinched the second 21-18, and continued on form to take the third 21-8.

These first round results saw the Aberdeenshire trio battle it out for three of the top four places. The first head to head was Mark and Jacob on opposing sides of the net. Jacob started in control winning the 1st 21-12, however the tables turned in the second with Mark winning 21-15. With all to play for the third set proved very entertaining for the many spectators, with Jacob taking the honours 21-14 against a splendid performance from the still U13 Mark.

With all three players having beaten Shaun Kennedy, the fourth player in the group, victory would be claimed by the winner between Jacob and Sean. Once again a thrilling match ensued with a fantastic display of skill, stamina and determination from both players. The first two games were evenly matched with Sean winning the 1st 21-15, and Jacob winning the 2nd 21-16. Sean took an early lead in the third however Jacob fought back to level the match at 11 all. At this crucial point Sean managed to pull ahead of Jacob and kept his composure to win the tie, and the title, 21-12.
