Dance mad Mackie Academy S2 pupil, Gemma Banister, is getting excited about the chance to dance with the Scottish Ballet.

She’ll be part of their production of Hansel & Gretel at HMT in Aberdeen next week.

The touring production invited 12-14 year olds from the North-east to audition last year for the Aberdeen show and Gemma is now in final rehearsals.

She said: “I was so excited to get the chance to audition. I got to meet the artistic director and a dancer from the Scottish Ballet but didn’t think my dancing would be good enough to get through.

“Afterwards, I was so nervous waiting to find out. When I finally got the letter telling me I was in the show I just grinned. I couldn’t believe it.”

Gemma nearly didn’t get the chance as she had decided to give up her ballet four years ago, to have more free time after school, but she was persuaded to continue by her ballet teacher, Miss Forrest.

With 16 young dancers split into two casts supporting the Aberdeen show, Gemma gets to perform in the Thursday matinee and Friday and Saturday evening shows when the Ballet plays next week.

Along with all her ballet, modern and highland dancing, Gemma also dances with the Mackie Academy students taking part in the Rock Challenge competition.

Mackie Academy were crowned Scottish Champions of the Rock Challenge competition last year.
