Preparations for the 28th Stonehaven Folk Festival are said to be going well ahead of the event which takes place early next month.

There are currently over 50 different events being planned, ranging from Town Hall concerts featuring national and international artists to sessions with local musicians and singers.

The festival also includes a series of workshops, mostly based in the Community Centre.

They will use many members of the bands performing over the weekend acting as guest tutors.

This provides an opportunity to learn from experienced musicians and singers in a friendly and informal atmosphere.

The workshops are supported by grants from Semichem and the Meikle Carew Wind Farm.

There is also a new window display in Stonehaven Library featuring many photographs from the Mearns Camera Club.

Organiser Charlie West explains: “We have worked with the Mearns Camera Club for the last two years where they have treated the Folk Festival as a photographic project.

“Eight photographers contributed to the project and we started with nearly 1000 pictures to choose from.

“They create a wonderful pictorial archive for the Folk Festival and create a sense of the atmosphere and fun of the weekend.”

He noted that making the final call on what photos were on display was not an easy decision.

“It was very difficult to make the final selection, but we are very pleased with the results,” he added.

The Camera Club will continue the project again this year.

Ticket sales are going well and the organisers expect to sell out over the weekend.

There have even been sales internationally, with tickets being bought from the USA, Australia, Canada and mainland Europe.

For local visitors, tickets are available for personal callers from Celtic Chords on Stonehaven’s Barclay Street, or by phoning the ticket line on 07480 126320.

And they can even be bought online on www.stonehavenfolkfestival.co.uk.

The website also contains full festival details, including the workshop programme.

The Stonehaven Folk festival will take place across the town from July 7 - 10.

Among the line-up for the festival are: Saltfishforty, Blazin’ Fiddles, the Scott Wood Band, Daimh, Tannara, Artie’s Tartan Tales and the Jellyman’s Daughter.
