Brits spend an average of just 4.3 minutes each day on breakfast according to new research.
The nation is stuck in a breakfast rut, with time-poor Brits struggling to overcome morning mealtime monotony, according to research by Lyle’s Golden Syrup®.
Findings show that on average Brits spend as little as 4.3 minutes a day having their breakfast - that’s less time than your average commercial break, boiling an egg or peeling a kilo of potatoes.
Glasgow is the most time-poor city, with almost a quarter spending three minutes or less on breakfast, compared to those based in Aberystwyth, who prefer taking time in the morning, with well 60 per cent spending 10 minutes or more on the meal.
Not only do Brits struggle to find the time to have breakfast, but when they do, the majority admit to eating the same thing daily. Cereal (37 per cent), toast (24 per cent) and porridge (12 per cent) topped the poll of most popular breakfast choices – however the nation are pining for more variety at breakfast time, with almost a quarter stating they’d like to try something new.
To help Brits overcome the morning rut and provide some breakfast inspiration, Lyle’s Golden Syrup® has collaborated with acclaimed writer, cook, food stylist and presenter, Jo Pratt, to create time-saving, delicious and easy breakfast recipes.
She said: “Breakfast is the most important part of the morning, so I want to get Brits excited about their first meal of the day again. We understand that people are increasingly time-poor in the mornings, but that doesn’t mean they need to stick to the same-old cereal or toast day-in, day-out, as there are a number of delicious meals that can be prepared in five minutes or less that are sure to brighten their day.”
Jo’s top tips for avoiding morning mayhem:
1. Don’t leave things to the last minute: If you find you have 15 minutes spare in the evening, prepare the kids’ lunch and get their clothes out and ready for the next morning, so as you have more time to relax and enjoy breakfast.
2. Set your alarm for 10 minutes earlier: Setting your alarm 10 minutes before you actually need to get up gives you the chance to settle before the day starts and allows you thinking time to prepare for the day ahead.
3. Try something different for breakfast: Alternating between cereal, toast and something a little different, like a delicious homemade breakfast bar with Lyle’s Golden Syrup, gives you the energy to power through the morning, avoiding that breakfast monotony.
4. Indulge in something you love: Allow yourself the time to indulge in something you love, whether it’s listening to music, taking an extra-long hot shower or enjoying a coffee on the back patio. Finding the time to do something you love will set you up for a brighter, more enjoyable day.
5. Never leave the house without a full belly: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so eating something nutritious and filling is the perfect way to avoid the morning blues.
