Charles says farewell

charles Wallace, Editor of the Mearns Leader and Kincardineshire Observer, leaves his job today after more than 35 years working on local weekly newspapers.

Charles actually began his career on the Leader in 1977, long-time editor Bert James was his first boss.

He later moved on to take over as editor of the Kincardineshire Observer, combining that role with duties on the Montrose Review.

He subsequently became editor of the Review, then almost three years ago, in April 2010, he moved back to work in Stonehaven and take over as editor of the Leader.

Charles says: “I’m sad to be leaving after so long in weekly newspaper journalism.

“I’ve worked with some good people, but above all I will miss the folk of the Mearns, who have made me welcome wherever I have gone over the years.

“A weekly newspaper has a special role in the community and I hope that will always be the case.

“We exist to serve the reader, the person who picks up the paper off the shelves on a Thursday or Friday.

“I have enjoyed a good relationship with a great many people over the years, contributors to the titles, MPs, MSPs, councillors, community councillors etc and I thank them all.”

Charles says he plans to take stock of things for a period before looking for new employment.
