Funding for Men’s Shed and Laurencekirk lights

Portlethen Men’s Shed and Laurencekirk Christmas Lights have received funding this week from Aberdeenshire Council.

Councillors at the Kincardine and Mearns area committee meeting on Tuesday granted the awards after applications had been made by the two groups.

The Portlethen and District Men’s Shed had applied for £375 towards the cost of architectural drawings, a planning application and renovation funds but were awarded £750 after Councillor Ian Mollison put forward a motion to grant them full funding rather than the 50% asked for.

In the report to councillors, it said: “The group are working towards a Community Asset Transfer of a disused toilet block in Portlethen.

‘‘Considerable work will be required to the building to enable it to become a useful space for the group.

“Mens’ Sheds are a form of community outreach that are growing in popularity and offer an opportunity to promote health and wellbeing of older men. A very good example of an operational shed is in Westhill, this resource is proving to be an inspiration to others.”

The Laurencekirk Christmas Lights Group were also awarded £1000 by the area committee to purchase new Christmas Tree lights.

The group received the full amount that they had applied for.
