With just over eight weeks to go, organisers of the 2015 Stonehaven Half Marathon are preparing for what they expect will be an extra special race.

The event will be the 30th year that the town has held the half marathon and to mark the occasion all finishers will receive a celebration T-shirt.

There are also two important changes to the event for 2015 with the start time being brought forward to 10am and the final mile being changed slightly to bring runners into Mineralwell Park down the Glebe Path.

The Stonehaven Half Marathon is a challenging 13.1mile circular route taking runners out of the town and up to Swanley before returning into the finish along the Slug Road. Each year it attracts a large amount of local fun runners and members clubs based around the North East of Scotland and beyond.

“We hope that the changes we have made this year will improve the event for runners and spectators” explained John Ritchie who chairs the organising committee.

“Bringing runners into Mineralwell from the Glebe will mean that spectators in the park can see and support their finishers for the final kilometre. A 10am start will mean setting the alarm a little earlier for regular participants but we hope this will not inconvenience our runners too much.

“This year, as in previous years the committee must give a big thank you to the many local businesses and community organisations who provide volunteers, advice and support financially or otherwise to help make this event the continuing success that it is. “

The race will start at Mineralwell park on Sunday July 5 at 10am. With nearly 200 runners already signed up there is still plenty of time to enter. The entry limit has been increased this year to 500 following last year’s turnout of 400 entrants and 337 runners. As well as a T shirt, all finishers will receive a goody bag, medal, complimentary swim at the Open Air Pool and the traditional spread of food and juice put on by Stonehaven Running Club volunteers. There are also placing awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female. The Stonehaven Half Marathon is a not for profit event and is again raising money for CLAN Cancer Support. This year’s entry fee is £18 (£16 if entrants are affiliated to Scottish Athletics) and more information about the race can be found at stonehavenhalfmarathon.co.uk and entries can be made at www.entrycentral.com/stonehaven-half-marathon. The committee would also be very interested to hear from local community members who will not be running but would like to assist with marshalling on the day and pick up a commemorative T-Shirt as thanks.
