STONEHAVEN musher Wattie McDonald and his team of huskies will once again be entertaining the crowds this weekend, in the third annual Stonehaven Husky Extravaganza.
Taking place throughout Saturday and Sunday at Baird Park from 10am to 4pm, Wattie and his huskies will be offering sled rides around Baird park as part of a fund raiser for Watties Iditarod 2012 challenge, as well as a husky parade through the main streets on Saturday at 4.30pm.
Wattie said: “I just love the atmosphere of this very special weekend while putting smiles on everyone’s face and helping to raise some much needed funds to allow me to fly the flag for Scotland over in Alaska next March. We provided hundreds of rides last year and it looks like it will be another busy weekend.
If the snow arrives that will be a bonus but if not we will use the wheeled carts and everyone will still have a blast. We have been training the dogs within Fetteresso forest this autumn and winter and the dogs are in peak condition and just raring to go. We also have a few teams coming from around Scotland to help out and support the event.”
There will be the local scouts providing the BBQ there will also be various organisations coming along to make it just a magical weekend.
There is also the Kevins day fun run on the Sunday which will add to the occasion. We have trail Baby Sled dog supplies coming over who are 1 of Watties main sponsors. Sharon does a fantastic job with custom making the harnesses for my Iditarod team and she will be on hand with lots of advice on gear and equipment and not just for sled dogs - Sharon can custom make just about anything for any breed.
Waaite said: “We even have a very special person coming over from Alaska to help out with the Huskies, Julie St Louis who is a professional dog handler for other Iditarod mushers. She has made the long trip over to join in the fun and get a first hand look at how we do it over here.”
We hope to have the annual husky parade through the main street on the Sat evening but we are struggling for a pipe band so if there is anyone who may be able to help out with the pipe band or even just a couple of pipers then please get in touch.
