“2014 has been a very successful season with good weather all round and no major problems to deal with” was how chair, Donnie Blease, began his report to the AGM of the Wairds Park Committee in the Clubroom at the park on Thursday night. He did think also that the committee deserved a break from the storm damage, leaks and excessive water charges of the previous year!
He then went on to say that this was the committee’s first full year linked to the online campsite booking system Pitch Up, an initiative which had definitely helped to keep a steady income from tourers and tents with a 9.4 out of 10 ranking, 96% of visitors saying that they would recommend the site and would themselves return.
With regard to the park’s outdoor sporting and recreational facilities Mr Blease said that they continue to be popular with local residents and visitors alike, the floodlit multi-sports courts being the most favoured – especially for five-a-side football and tennis.
However, the putting green, bowling green, the picnic and children’s play areas had all done well: the football pitch is now looking particularly healthy and was used regularly by the primary school and continues to serve as the home ground of Johnshaven Athletic in Division One (North) of the Aberdeenshire Amateur League.
Mr Blease stressed, too, that the committee aim to continue with their phased approach to rejuvenation , repair and replacement of all outdoor equipment and spaces.
Indoors, the clubroom continues to offer an excellent venue for community groups such as the Coastal Colourists, Bowling Club, Putters and the Little Nippers’ toddler group who all use the facility on a weekly basis while other local organisations choose it as their preferred location for meetings and fund-raising events. The park’s main source of revenue is, of course, the caravan and camping site and the chair was happy to report that it remains full with several new vans replacing some of the tired ones and the committee is especially delighted that the occupants take pride in Wairds Park, keeping their spaces neat and tidy. They do, however, recognise that the professional, friendly and attentive staff is one of the main reasons that their visitors enjoy their holiday time and look forward to returning each year.
Then, as he reflected in general terms on 2014, Mr Blease said that while no major projects had been undertaken, new fencing had been erected around the tent areas, the multi-courts had been tidied up and both the football pitch and putting green appropriately treated, the latter also having been scarified.
Looking forward to another successful season he went on to say that a number of minor matters needed to be attended to including the treatment of the clubroom floor and the refurbishment of the small fort.
However, following the park’s annual electrical check-up, it was noted that the integrity of the power supplies at the north end may be affected by fatigued armour on the underground cabling and, subject to further tests, it is likely that the power supply and associated equipment may require replacement and his would have to take priority over all else.
The chair ended his comprehensive report by commending Jenny, Lynne, Mike and Margaret for the professionalism and attention which they brought to the day-to day management of the park. He also expressed his appreciation to Fiona Bruce for her commitment in her role as Treasurer and for ensuring a smooth transfer of duties to Fiona Dundas.
He was also grateful for the support given to him by his fellow office-bearers and committee members and to Donald Dundas for continuing to run the putting competitions so competently. He very much appreciated the personal time which they all gave to the management of the Wairds Park.
The Statement of Accounts showed that income for the year to October 31, 2014, was £72,308 and expenditure £54,824.
The main source of income was from the caravan and camping site which generated £66,135 while the putting green produced a welcome increase from last year of £100 to £363.
On the expenditure side the cost of repairs and renewals was £17,488, wages and National Insurance £10,434, electricity £8333 and insurance £5372 and the committee ended the season with net assets of £51,433.
Masonic Divine Service
The Provincial Grand Lodge of Kincardineshire held their annual Divine Service in Johnshaven Church on Sunday morning. Brethern marched in procession from the Masonic Lodge to the Church where the service was conducted by retired minister, the Rev Linda Broadley and the organist was Mrs Helen Doig.
This Sunday there will be only one service in Mearns Coastal Parish and that will be a united service in St Cyrus Church at 11 am.
It will be followed by the Stated Annual Meeting and a time of refreshment and fellowship. On Thursday, April 2 there will be an Easter Walk around St Cyrus followed by a Maunday Thursday service at 7.30 pm in St Cyrus Church which will also be the venue for the Good Friday service at 11 am.
