Two sisters from Laurencekirk have described as a “great honour” their selection as bench officials at the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Former Mearns Academy pupils Rachel and Amanda Hampton will be keeping score, timing the game and keeping individual scoring statistics at netball during the Games, which will be held in Glasgow.

The sisters have trained as netball officals and gained experience by officiating at local, national and international level matches. They were the first two accredited bench officials from the Aberdeen area in March 2012.

Rachel (28) said: “We applied in January to volunteer at the games with a specific indication of our netball experience.

‘‘We had interviews in April, completed further application forms supported by evidence of our official work in September and finally found out last week that we had been successful.

“It was a long wait but well worth it to have the opportunity of representing our country at such a major sporting event and on home soil too!

‘‘It’s a great honour to be part of the games and to help promote netball in Scotland and throughout the commonwealth.

‘‘ It is also a sport we are both passionate about and feel extremely lucky that we can contribute to it through this role.”

Rachel and Amanda (25) have been involved in netball from primary school until the end of their secondary education. They both joined Rebound netball club in 2009 and compete in the local ADNA (Aberdeen district netball association) leagues.
