Stonehaven & District Sea Cadets had a high profile visitor last week when the Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire, Carol Kinghorn, made a presentation to one of the Unit’s senior cadets.
After inspecting and chatting to every cadet, Mrs Kinghorn presented Leading Cadet Michael Blacklaw with the prestigious Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet Award which means that during 2011, Michael will accompany the Lord Lieutenent on official duties as her cadet. Michael received a signed parchment and uniform badges to signify the appointment.
Michael’s citation from Commanding Officer Kevin W. Morris read: “Michael is an excellent cadet with our Unit and is a great example for all our younger cadets as to what can be achieved within the Sea Cadet Corps. Since joining our Unit in April 2007 Michael has qualified for the highest rate a cadet can achieve, Petty Officer Cadet, pending reaching 16 years of age. Michael contributes fully to all activities within both the Unit and wider afield and makes best use of all the opportunities afforded to him with the Sea Cadets.
“Michael is qualified in a whole range of disciplines including first aid, communications, seamanship, boat pulling, BCU paddlesports, RYA dinghy sailing, RYA powerboating, ASA swimming, offshore power and sailing, swimming, expedition training and is working towards completion of his Bronze Duke Of Edinburgh’s Award.
“In February 2011, Michael became the first cadet from Stonehaven Unit to achieve the Cadet Pulling Instructor qualification following a summer season of comprehensive training delivered locally at Unit level and subsequent assessments.
“During the past year, Michael has participated in a wide range of competitions, culminating in when Michael was the coxswain of the national winning Boathandling Oars team when they wrested the title back from Portsmouth at the Corps National Combined Regatta held at the London ExCel centre in September. Michael also undertakes the vitally important role of Parade Commander and is the current cadet representative on the Unit Fundraising team.”
