There have been two meetings of the club in January, starting with the installation of new president Eric Bell at the first meeting.
Eric received the Chain of Office from outgoing President Lawrie Smith, having completed his year in office.
Bill Rebecca, from Montrose, was the first speaker this year to address the Mearns Club. Bill is a retired school teacher who latterly taught at Mearns Academy. His subject was ‘magic’ and, as a long time member of the Magic Circle, he had brought along a selection of the props used in his shows.
As a hobby, he is much in demand to appear at various local occasions, all to raise funds for charities and entertain audiences of all ages.
Using members of the Mearns Club to assist in his demonstrations, Bill proceeded to entertain his audience along with some of the many anecdotes from life and past presentations.
Ian Davidson thanked Bill on behalf of the Club.
January 20, another dull Monday morning, was brightened up by long time member Alex Finlayson’s presentation on ‘Music in his Lifetime’.
Attending lessons on piano playing from the age of seven, he had achieved most of his grades and certification before leaving school. This had been done more to please his mother rather than for his pleasure, but it had proved to be a great source of pleasure throughout his lifetime.
Alex had brought along his keyboard and demonstrated how music can be easily varied with the help of modern day electronic technology.
From church music, classical, dance, wedding marches to funeral requests, Alex covered the whole range.
He concluded by getting all the members present to join together and sing a short song written especially for Probus Clubs.
Bill Pirie called on members to accord Alex a vote of thanks in appreciation of an excellent presentation and entertainment.
