The mess left behind by a group of travellers in a private field adjacent to Fetteresso Cemetery has been branded “a disgrace” by a local Councillor.
Around 10 caravans had been staying in the field in recent months, but they have all now gone, leaving behind piles of rubbish, as well as an abandoned car and a burnt out caravan among other debris.
Angry Stonehaven residents have expressed their anger at the situation online, with one commenting: “They are yards from the graves of loved ones and have turned a field into a tip. They have no respect.”
The group had moved to the site in the summer after being evicted from a car park at Dunnottar Woods.
Stonehaven and Lower Deeside Councillor Wendy Agnew said: “It’s disgraceful. Anyone with any decency would never leave the mess that has been left there.
“There should be zero tolerance for leaving a mess like that, it is illegal dumping and they should be prosecuted. You don’t do that to private property. It’s just dreadful.”.
A spokesperson for Aberdeenshire Council said: “We are appalled by the mess that has been left following the unauthorised encampment at Fetteresso. Police Scotland, Environmental Health, Trading Standards, Landscape Services and others worked together to address the issues raised during their stay there. We were also in constant contact with the landowner to offer advice and support. It is important to note that the actions of a minority of individuals are not representative of the entire Gypsy Traveller community.”
