Banchory-Devenick Primary School has been awarded £10,000 by Awards for All Scotland, to further improve its playground.
The new playground officially opened on Friday May 29, and will benefit the 56 pupils at the Aberdeenshire school. It features a play lodge, tipi, music and friendship area, storytelling chair, mini beast exploration table, planters and benches.
Awards for All Scotland is a partnership between the Big Lottery Fund Scotland and sportscotland. It funds projects which bring local people together, help people learn, improve local spaces and get people more active.
With the appointment of Head Teacher Miss Michelle Watson in August 2013, pupils and families were asked what they would like to improve about the school and one of the key areas was the playground.
Michelle Watson explains: “Pupils, staff and families spent time coming up with a plan for the playground and last year we sent off an application to Awards for All Scotland. We had to show we were making improvements to the playground this academic year and raise an extra £1,500. The children had a very successful year organising, tidying and improving the garden area, with ongoing support from local family company A & M Smith Skip Hire Limited. The additional money was raised through Parent Council fundraising initiatives including the school fair and community ceilidh.”
Michelle added: “This has only been possible due to the positive community action Banchory-Devenick has provided. We have an incredibly supportive parent group who always come up with new and inventive ideas for fundraising. Now our children can play in a playground, which has a creative space with musical instruments, a quiet space for reflection, a friendship area to communicate with each other, a physical area to exercise in, a wildlife area for biodiversity and a vegetable garden for sustainability. Playgrounds should be places where children and families want to explore. To say the children are delighted with the final result would be an understatement.”
