The new state of the art Science Centre at Lathallan School, Johnshaven was officially opened on Thursday September 29.
The Centre incorporates a Junior Science Laboratory, discrete laboratories for all three sciences and a working greenhouse laboratory for environmental science.
Other features of the new Science Centre include an eco-garden and outside teaching area. S6 pupils have their own preparation area exclusively for Advanced Higher study. Staff and pupils were heavily involved in the design of the building, from bespoke classrooms for each teacher, to computers built by the pupils; the Science Centre was developed to be the best learning facility for Lathallan pupils, and the highest standard of design. With lots of light and glass panelling, it is a light, airy building to inspire young minds of the present and the future.
Former Consul (Head Boy) and Pipe Major, Thomas Cowie (2005-2013) currently studying a Masters in Physics at Cambridge University will unveil the plaque and named laboratories will be opened by Dr Pamela King, daughter of the late Donald King, a former teacher at Lathallan for 34 years, Mr Alex Callander, former pupil (1969-1973) and Mr Steve Blackburn, Chair of the Lathallan Parents’ Association respectively.
Professor Sir Graeme Catto, Chair of the Lathallan Board of Governors and Headmaster, Mr Richard Toley will welcome the guests who include the local community councillor, donors, staff, parents and key representatives of those involved in the architecture and construction of the new centre.
Mr Richard Toley, Headmaster, “ We are delighted to officially open our new Science Centre and in particular to have Tom to do so. As a small school our pupils like to see where their Lathallan education can take them and the new Science Centre means that they can enjoy that journey even more.”
