Some Aberdeenshire recycling centres closed and bin collections cancelled due to adverse weather
Aberdeenshire Council’s waste services will be impacted over the next couple of days due to the predicted adverse weather as resources are being focused on keeping roads to vaccination centres open.
Recycling centres in Banchory, Huntly, Inverurie, Laurencekirk, Stonehaven, Turriff and Westhill have been closed.
Recycling centres in Ellon, Fraserburgh, Macduff, Peterhead and Portlethen will remain open today (Friday, February 5) and Saturday, but all other recycling centres will be closed.
The situation will be reviewed on Saturday regarding which centres may be able to open on Sunday and updates will be provided through social media – this will depend on the weather forecast for Sunday and the council’s ability to clear any snow accumulations.
Bookings have been cancelled and those affected are being notified by email.
The usual lockdown advice applies – whilst recycling centres have remained open for essential use, please only visit a recycling centre if it is absolutely necessary.
Bins on some rural routes in the amber weather warning area will not be emptied on Friday. Notifications to those affected are being issued through the myAberdeenshire app. Please remember to switch on bin notifications on the app to receive updates.
Unfortunately the council says it will not be able to return at a later date to empty the bins missed.
Where bins have been missed due to adverse weather, additional waste/recycling will be collected at the next scheduled collection for that bin. The council is asking households to help keep the crews safe by putting any additional recycling into cardboard boxes or clear bags, so crews can easily see it is recycling without opening them.
The arrangements may change depending on circumtances locally – for further updates, please keep an eye on the Facebook page @AberdeenshireRecycling and sign up for bin notifications on the myAberdeenshire app.
The Met Office has issued various weather warnings for the Aberdeenshire area for the next couple of days, with a yellow warning for snow and ice covering much of the Grampian area, and a more severe amber warning covering areas away from the coast. In areas experiencing heavy snowfall, people are being asked not to travel unless absolutely necessary.
