Portlethen Gala returns

PORTLETHEN Gala will take place this Saturday, August 27, and is set to be a day of fun activities and live music.

Activities and entertainment have been organised for all ages throughout the day, including live musical performances from Newtonhill Pipe Band and local acts including Michael Dart, Brothers Reid and Standby.

Bobby the Playbus, a bouncy castle, climbing wall, bungee run, and beat the goalie competition will keep the kids entertained while there will be various stalls selling gifts, jewellery and toys as well as a BBQ and beer tent.

Proceeds raised on the day will go towards local children’s charity, Befriend A Child, which provides a befriending service to deprived and vulnerable children in Aberdeen and has recently expanded its services into Aberdeenshire for the first time.

Karen Farquhar, Chief Executive of Befriend A Child, says everyone at the charity is looking forward to another great day and to building on the success of last year’s gala which Befriend A Child reintroduced onto the North-east events’ calendar after an absence of more than five years.

She said: “Despite being really unlucky with the weather last year we had a great turnout at the gala with close to 1,000 people attending over the course of the day. This year we have an even wider range of stalls and activities for the whole family and are therefore hopeful of attracting visitors in even larger numbers.

“As well as offering a great day out, the gala is also an opportunity for us to further spread the word about the important work we do with underprivileged youngsters in the local area and anyone looking for more information about Befriend A Child and the services we offer is welcome to talk to our volunteers and staff who will be in attendance on the day.”

Established in 1975, Befriend A Child is Scotland’s oldest befriending service for disadvantaged children. Working with social workers, care homes, health visitors, and other charities, Befriend A Child supports children aged 4-16 and continues to work with them up until the age of 18, if required.

The event will run from 12-5pm in the grounds of Portlethen Academy and Bourtree Park.
