Portlethen needs more childcare

Many parents in Portlethen are struggling to find after-school care for their children in Portlethen. The After-School Club is working at maximum capacity and already has a waiting-list. The local childminders are fully booked.

Last week, in response to this, the Scottish Childminding Association, together with Aberdeenshire Council, Business Gateway and childcare@home , ran an informal information session to encourage more local people to consider a career in childcare.

This is being followed up with a free Childminding Induction Training Course in Portlethen on Saturdays 14, 21 and 28 September, for which several Portlethen residents have registered. However, more potential childminders are still needed.

“Local child-care is a real issue in Portlethen, “ commented Councillor Alison Evison. “I am working closely with local organisations to try to address it. Currently there are many opportunities for people considering a career in child-care, and the Scottish Childminding Association is offering training within the community. We are also looking at the possibility of a second After-School club being set up within Portlethen under the management of a community group. I am interested in hearing from anyone who would like to get involved with this. “
