Praise for moss work

Christian Allard, MSP for North East of Scotland, has praised community efforts to maintain raised bogs or mosses during his member’s debate at the Scottish Parliament.

Following recent visits to both Portlethen and Arnhall Mosses in Aberdeenshire, Mr Allard submitted a motion at Holyrood recognising the importance of raised bogs or mosses to local eco-systems as well as to communities that use them.

Mr Allard said: “I was delighted to have this opportunity to highlight the importance of mosses to local biodiversity as well as to nearby communities.

“The Arnhall and Portlethen Mosses are great examples of nature reserves where the local community has made an effort to protect and enhance the benefits of these natural assets.

“I want to thank all the volunteers, rangers and organisers who have given their time and efforts to protecting our local mosses – I will do all I can to support their work.”

The SNP MSP added that he wanted community owned nature reserves.

“I recognise the vital contribution that these habitats have for educating and engaging the wider community.

“That is why I will seek the full support of the Scottish Government to promote community ownership for mosses and nature reserves where appropriate.”
