Round the Rurals


Mrs Barclay welcomed all to our AGM. We started with the Rural Song. Mrs Barclay thanked our two tellers from the Federation and reports were given from the Secretary, Treasurer and the Chairman. Geddes Cup: 1. Mrs Marr, 2. Mrs Fraser, 3. Mrs Barclay. Mrs Rattray gave a vote of thanks. We had a delicious meal provided by the committee.

Competiton - Two Syllabus Suggestions: 1. Mrs Rattray, 2. Mrs Marr, 3. Mrs Barclay. Raffle was drawn, and the meeting finished with the National Anthem.


President Audrey Lowson welcomed members and two ladies from Muchalls WRI who had come to act as tellers to our business meeting and Bring and Buy sale. J. Thomas won the cup for most points over the last year and J. Thomas, K. Paterson and P. Dunn were joint winners of the flower of the month prize. A brisk trade saw the sales table quickly cleared and after the raffle and a quiz the new committee were duly elected with J. Thomas as new president, S. Bisset secretary and K. Paterson treasurer. S. Bisset gave the vote of thanks to our tellers, the tea ladies, and gave a special mention to the retiring president and committee. Competition winners for Pate: 1. J. Thomas, 2. P. Dunn, 3 (equal). S. Pike & K. Paterson. Flower of the month: 1. C. Donald, 2. S. Donald, 3. P. Dunn.


Our business meeting was held on Monday May 11 for the election of new office bearers. Julia Christian and Julie Benstead from Tewel SWI acted as tellers and were accompanied by Hazel Robson from Kincardineshire Federation. The following were elected - President & Press Secretary: Jane Sanders, Vice President: Elaine Watt, Treasurer: Sheila Hay, Secretary: Lorna Harrison, Teas: Audrey Campbell, Competitions/Raffles: Irene Finch. Winner of 300 Club: Lorna Harrison. Competition Winners - Cushions: Eleanor Main, Betty Silver, Irene Finch. Three month Syllabus: Wilma Duguid, Betty Silver, Jane Sanders. Wilma Duguid was presented with a shield and a cup for being the overall points winner for the year. Runners up were: 2. Eleanor Main, 3=. Isobel Goddard and Betty Silver.

The Bring and Buy sale, with items contributed by members raised over £44. Portlethen SWI will be taking a break over the summer. The next meeting will be 7.15pm on Monday September 14 in the Larch Room of Portlethen Academy Community Wing.


Newtonhill WI held their AGM on Thursday May 14 in Skateraw Hall. President Mrs Zena McLeod welcomed the members and the voting sheets were collected. Mrs Heather Hopkins gave secretary’s report, Mrs Margaret Mulligan gave treasurer’s report, and Mrs Zena McLeod gave president’s report. Other business was attended to and cup for most competition points was awarded to M/s Janet Hacket, 2. Mrs Wood 3. Mrs Heather Hopkins. The votes having been counted it was announced that the same committee members had been re-elected. We have had an interesting number of speakers this year and are pleased that we have maintained our membership and would hope to do the same in the following year. Our Summer Outing is on the June 11 for lunch at Brechin Garden Centre.


Laurencekirk WRI held their business meeting on the May 19. After welcoming the company, the monthly business was dealt with and this was followed by the annual reports. Fiona Milton Secretary gave a resume of the monthly meetings, Nancy Allan Treasurer gave her annual report explaining the details of the balance sheet and Mary Allan President gave her address, thanking the of the committee for their support over the year, and the Members for attending regardless of the weather. She also thanked them for providing the teas at the local Gala Tea Dance in the Summer, and the Christmas Lights and Hanging Baskets Coffee Mornings. The Competition Trophys went to 1. Fiona Milton, Runner Up Mary Allan, Flower of the Month, Equal Margaret Davidson and Fiona Milton. President also presented Fiona Milton with a SWRI Loyalty Certificate for all her work over the years. Competion Winners - Members choice of taste and try: 1. Nancy Allan, 2. Equal Cathy McLean and Fiona Milton. Unusual Butter Dish: 1. Isobel Ingram, 2. Mary Allan. Flower of the Month, Mary Young. The Tellers for the evening were Marelyn Easton and Isobel Rithchie of Marykirk WRI and the results were as follows: President, Mary Allan, Vice President, Sheila Wilson, Secretary, Fiona Milton, Treasurer, Nancy Allan, Press Secretary, Bell Wisener. With Ann Black, Isobel Ingram, Betty Ritchie, Mary Wink and Mary Young.
