Locally-based tourism consultant, Elma McMenemy, spoke to the Leader about her concerns for the cruise ship scheme.
A professional Blue Badge tourist guide, she said: “I always aim to support new initiatives for Stonehaven, but I find it hard to be positive about this project, due entirely to the practicalities.
‘‘Although I cannot comment on the suitability or otherwise of the anchorage, the harbour itself is not a practical location for the 10 or so large tour coaches which would be required for passengers’ shore excursions.
‘‘The only vehicle access to our harbour is signed as unsuitable for long vehicles and some coach companies and drivers will not drive beyond this. Drivers who do so, believe that a maximum of two coaches can be at the harbour at any one time, with space for safe manoeuvring.
‘‘Smaller cruise ships already visit the area via Aberdeen Harbour; perhaps a more practical project would be to try to attract shore excursions from these ships and others visiting Dundee and Montrose.”
