Volunteers needed to help get pool ready

Volunteers are needed to help make sure one of Stonehaven’s top tourist attractions is ready for it’s official opening in Summer.

The Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Pool are appealing for volunteers to join the work squad preparing the Pool for its opening on Saturday May 26. This year, however, more volunteers are needed than ever before. David Dobbie, who helps organise the Friends’ work squad explained: “in addition to all the usual cleaning, painting and maintenance, the Pool, like many other Stonehaven buildings, suffered damage during the December and January storms, so there’s even more work to do than planned. Also, the paint we are applying this year is a completely new type, and once the cans are opened and stirred, we have only a 2-hour window to apply the paint. Of course, the painting must also be done during dry weather, which means we need even more people in our paint squad so that, when the weather’s good, we can apply as much as we can in as short a period as possible.”

The painting work needing done is one a massive scale – the Pool tank is 50 metres long and over 18 metres wide, with depth from 80cm to 2.21 metres. The tank holds 290,000 gallons. However, it nly take 450 litres of paint to cover the tank – and once, applied, this new paint should last for many years.

In addition, the sea-side boundary wall is currently being re-harled by the volunteers, who found the brick in very poor repair beneath the old harling. Storm damage includes the shark chute platform, which was blown off and into the Pool where it sailed up to the deep end.

David added: “anyone who has some time to offer will find they don’t need any special skills – just overalls and a smile! We all really have fun too and always make new friends. The work starts on Monday 13th February, when we’re having an open afternoon from 1pm. The work will continue from then each Monday and Wednesday from 1-4pm and on Saturdays from 9am – 12 noon from Saturday 10th March.”

The Friends are also seeking volunteers to contact everyone on the current members’ database so that it may be updated for future contact by email.
