Volunteers step forward to keep society blooming

VOLUNTEERS have answered a plea for people to come forward to save Stonehaven and District Horticultural Society from having to fold - and the group now has a full committee!

At a recent special meeting, a number of members - on seeing the possible end of the Society’s activities - rallied to the call and the committee is ready and able to continue the annual programme of events.

Unfortunately, however, owing to these unforeseen difficulties which have delayed certain event arrangements the group has had to cancel its Spring Show on Saturday, March 9, and the Spring Garden Competition.

However it is hoped that elements of the cancelled spring event can be incorporated into this year’s Summer Show in August.

The group’s other events, such as the plant sale in May, Summer Garden Competition and the scheduled evening talks on February 21, March 21 and the April 18 will go ahead as normal.

The new office-bearers are John Shinnie (chairman), Annie Adams (secretary), Jenny Hunter (treasurer) and Allan Cairnduff (minutes secretary).

Committee members are Tom McGregor, Robert Souter, Sandy McLaughlin, Mary Jackson, Rhona Robertson and Jo Goldsworthy. In addition, A. Pyper, M. Paley and F. Bain will assist as voluntary stewards.

The group’s next event is a presentation by Alan Findlay, facility manager, on the “ Restoration of Duthie Park” on Thursday, February 21, at 7.30pm in the Invercarron Resource Centre, Stonehaven.

This is expected to be a popular event, free of charge, and everyone is welcome to join in.
