Artists from Deeside and Durris joined artists from the Mearns on a course in Watercolour Painting at the Lewis Grassic Gibbon Centre, Arbuthnott at the end of June.
Course Tutor, David Johnston, explained that the aim of the course was to help artists who already had some experience in the medium make better pictures. Weather conditions on the Saturday made outdoor sketching impossible but course members used the Hall at Arbuthnott as a studio-workspace to develop ideas. Here the emphasis was on the use of tonal values to create successful landscape compositions.
The Centre proved to be an ideal base and, on the Sunday, the skies cleared allowing the course to engage in outdoor sketching in the grounds of Arbuthnott House.
Despite dodging showers, much was achieved and, overall, the course was thought a great success. Artists often work in isolation and, in addition to refining their practical skills, course members appreciated the opportunity to meet, discuss and exchange ideas with the tutor and with each other.
