Hillside House was gutted by fire last Friday night.

Police are treating a fire which destroyed an historic Portlethen home and garden centre last Friday evening as deliberate.

Police Scotland are appealing for witnesses to come forward following the fire at Hillside House which started at approximately 10pm on Friday August 26. The property, which was being renovated, was completely destroyed.

The northbound carriageway of the A90 was closed off while more than 30 firefighters from seven appliances battled the blaze until 4am. It is thought that when fire crews arrived the blaze had reached all three floors and the roof of the derelict building which has now been declared unsafe.

Local Liberal Democrat councillor Ian Mollison commented: “Hillside House was a beautiful 19th century building and this is a loss to the community. It was a grade B listed building from 1972 until 11 August this year. The way it was allowed to deteriorate over the years is most regrettable.”

Police Scotland are appealing for anyone with any information to contact them on 101, or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, if they wish to remain anonymous.
