Mackie 2nd XV recorded their first win of the league campaign last Saturday against a Peterhead side sitting above them in the table.
As soon as the whistle blew Mackie were on the front foot, the strong forwards pack causing problems for the defence before Neil ‘Pedro’ Owen picked up the ball from the back of the ruck and danced past a few forwards to score and Calum Reddish added the extra two points. From the kick off again Mackie pressed, and the ball ended up in the hands of powerhouse Ian Coull who burst through the tackle and dived over the line.
Mathew Flynn impressed with his pace and power to break through for two tries whilst Owen added two more to complete his hat-trick.
the glut of tries continued with Gerry Lock, Kieron Ferguson and Andy Reid all crossing the line. Special mention goes to Ian Tweakerson’s effort which was caught from the kick off and immediately shipped away from the on coming defence to Tweakerson who used his lightening pace to burn a line down the wing to score a beautiful try.
The new 2nd XV captain Alexander Pittendreigh showed he’s been handed down a bit of skill from his father (a Mackie Legend) and made a cracking break with a hand off to gain 60 yards before being tackled by the impressive Peterhead full back, but setting up position for one of the many tries scored on the day.
A good day for the kicker Callum Reddish (6 out of 8 conversions) and an improved defensive display means the 2nd XV have improved vastly on their previous performances.
