Amateur kick-off

The Aberdeenshire Amateur Football League begins its season tomorrow and the eleven local sides are well distributed through the divisions.

In the Premier Division, Cowie Thistle have been joined by the promoted pair, Luthermuir and Portlethen United.

Divison One North sees Mearns United, relegated from the Premier, joined by last season’s Division Two North champions, Bervie Caley, while Johnshaven Athletic and Newtonhill are together in Division One East.

Relegated Stonehaven Athletic are in Division Two North along with St Laurence and another relegated Stonehaven side, AC Mill Inn, find themselves in Division Two East along with Cammachmore.

Portlethen, Mearns United and St Laurence are not playing tomorrow. The fixtures for the other local sides are: Premier Division: Insch v Cowie Thistle; Luthermuir v Woodside.

Division One North: Bervie v Rothie Rovers. Division One East: Alford v Johnshaven; Newtonhill v Kintore.

Division Two North: Stonehaven Athletic v Glendale Youth. Division Two East: Mill Inn v Burghmuir; Banchory v Cammachmore.

The draws have been made for the first rounds of a number of cup competitions.

Ties as affecting the local sides are: AFC Trophy round one: Cammachmore v Turriff Thistle; Don Athletic v Luthermuir; Mearns United v Glendale; Sportsman’s Club v Portlethen; St Laurence v Highland Hotel; Stonehaven Athletic v Dee Amateurs.

Association Trophy round one: Newtonhill v Mearns United.

Dickie Trophy round one: Mill Inn v Ellon Thistle; St Laurence v BSFC.

Premier Trophy round one: Blackburn v Cowie Thistle; Luthermuir v Insch; Tarves v Portlethen.

Stephen Shield round one: Bervie v Rothie Rovers; Kemnay Youth v Mearns United.

White Cup round one: West End v Newtonhill.

Castle Rovers Cup round one: St Laurence v University Colts; Torphins v Stonehaven Athletic.

Barclay Cook Cup round one: Auchnagatt v Mill Inn; Cammachmore v Monymusk.

Luthermuir will have an early chance to win some silverware. As champions of Division One East last season, they will play the champions of Division One North, Insch, in the final of the Ian Napier Memorial Shield.

Four of the local sides contested the David Wiseman Memorial Trophy in Stonehaven last weekend, (July 28/29).

Competing were the hosts, Stonehaven Athletic, fellow Stonehaven sides A C Mill Inn and Cowie Thistle and Newtonhill.

The annual pre-season tournament took place at Mineralwell and the draw saw Athletic take on Cowie Thistle while A C Mill Inn played the holders Newtonhill.

Both matches were close encounters with Cowie edging out Athletic 3-1 and A C Mill Inn

beating Newtonhill by the same scoreline.

In the 3rd/4th place play-off on Sunday, Athletic and Newtonhill drew 2-2 while in the final Cowie Thistle held beat Mill Inn 2-1 in a closely fought contest.

Congratulations to Cowie Thistle on their first silverware of the season.

Also taking place in Mineralwell Park at the weekend was the Ma Simpson’s Party In The Park Charity fundraiser and a total of £313 was raised by the four competing teams and donated to their fund.
