Despite a cold and blustery start to the day, over 80 girls turned out for the 2011 Kincardineshire Primary Schools Netball Summer Cup on Saturday June 4. The event was held at Mill O’Forest Primary and six schools from the area were represented, Arduthie, Inverbervie, Laurencekirk, Mill O’Forest, Newtonhill and St. Cyrus.

With nine teams competing, the initial stages were played in a group format. The many spectators were treated to some superb play and thankfully also serviced with hot refreshments from the volunteer tuck shop! The cold conditions didn’t deter the girls with some superb play from all teams.

Both Bervie teams topped their respective groups to earn direct passage to the semi-finals, while Arduthie won the third group and were challenged by St. Cyrus in the quarter-final.

The other quarter-final in the main event was a battle between the two Laurencekirk teams. The play-offs for 7th, 8th and 9th place was contested between the two Mill O’ Forest teams and Newtonhill.

Mill O’Forest 2 won both matches to secure 7th place, with Newtonhill overcoming Mill O’Forest 1 to claim 8th place and Mill O’Forest 1, despite some spirited performances had to settle for 9th.

In the main event quarter-finals Arduthie were successful in their encounter with St Cyrus and similarly Laurencekirk 1 proved too strong for Laurencekirk 2.

As the weather started to improve the pace of the games started to increase. All four semi-finalists put on great performances, but it was Bervie 1 and Laurencekirk 1 who battled through to claim a place in the final.

The final was definitely the match of the day with the teams matching each other goal for goal in the early stages. The standard of play and superb teamwork from both finalists was fantastic.

With the score poised at 10–9 in favour of Bervie 1 at half-time there was still everything to play for. With a couple of quick interceptions and accurate shooting Bervie 1 managed to open up a small lead.

Despite every effort from the Laurencekirk team Bervie managed to hold on and win the match 16 – 12. A match which proved thoroughly entertaining for the many spectators.

Final positions were: 1 Bervie 1, 2 Laurencekirk 1, 3 Arduthie, 4 Bervie 2, 5 St Cyrus, 6 Laurencekirk 2, 7 Mill O’ Forest 2, 8 Newtonhill and 9 Mill O’ Forest 1.

The Summer Cup was a fitting end to a fantastic season for Bervie who also won both the P7 and P6 league shields.

Trish Marchant, head teacher at Mill O’ Forest, was on hand to present the Summer Cup and the League Shields to the successful Bervie teams.
