Derby ends in draw

Stonehaven Athletic 1

Newtonhill 1 NEWTONHILL and Athletic faced each other for the second time in as many weeks on August 13, with the two sides having met previously in the Wiseman Trophy final with Newtonhill winning 3-1. Newtonhill started off brightly but were unable to create any clear cut chances and were mainly restricted to efforts from long range. Milsom was unlucky to see his 25 yard effort brilliantly tipped round the post by the Athletic keeper.

Athletic made the breakthrough on the half hour mark when a cross cum shot from their left winger deceived Farquhar and drifted into the far corner of the net. Athletic continued to dominate into the second half and created several clear cut chances which they were unable to convert. Firstly, a header from six yards came crashing back off the bar then with just under 20 minutes to go, a midfielder blazed over from just 12 yards.

Newtonhill battled to try and haul themselves back into the game but had nothing to show for their efforts apart from a Barrazza effort which was dragged wide after a good run.

With just minutes to go, The Hill snatched an unlikely equaliser when a long throw-in from Brooks was only half cleared to Smith whose low cross was expertly finished by the veteran Blacklaws to ensure The Hill went home with an undeserved point.
