MS United 4 Stonehaven Athletic 1
It was back to league business for Athletic on Saturday when they visited Aberdeen to take on struggling MS United, knowing that a victory would move them well into promotion race. Unfortunately after a bright start the visitors crumbled yet again and were well beaten by a no more than average home side.
Athletic had the wind behind them in the first half and things were fairly even in the opening 20 minutes, then Cohen won the ball in midfield and played a lovely pass to Neish who controlled the ball and fired low past the keeper from 18 yards.
The wind seemed to strengthen at the start of the second half and MS pressed for an equaliser with this advantage. This arrived somewhat luckily in the 55th minute. The ball was crossed in from the left to the back post where the home striker miss-hit his attempt to control and the ball spun into the air, over Middleton and into the net.
Athletic were up against it and worse followed in 60 minutes when they were reduced to 10 men. Holtes was adjudged to have committed a foul on the edge of the box and as last defender, denying a goal scoring opportunity, he was unluckily shown a red card.
The home side went in front shortly afterwards when poor marking at a corner allowed a midfielder all the time he needed to head home from four yards.
MS went on to score two further goal before the end and ran out comfortable winners.
Another disappointing display from Athletic which makes next week’s fixture against Banchory crucial if they are to steer clear of the relegation zone.
