Fine win for Mackie 2nd XV

Mackie 2nd XV 33 Ellon 12

For the first time this season Mackie had a full squad to pick from and confidence was high going into this match.

Mackie, led by new captain Ally Pittendreigh, were soon on the attack. Some excellent work in the forwards by Mackie legend Ian Coull had Ellon on the back foot and the ball was played out through the hands to Jamie McConachie who ran in the try. Callum Reddish playing at hooker converted for the extra points.

Ellon restarted and again found themselves on the back foot, this time losing possession at the breakdown.

A great ruck from Jo Robertson won the ball back for the reds and a kick though by scrum half Andrew Reid had him scoring under the posts for a great score.

The reds were soon another score ahead with Jo Robertson blasting over the line, Reddish converted and Mackie were three scores up and flying.

To the delight of the large crowd Mackie were again on the scoresheet, this time fans’ favourite Steven ‘Frankie’ Allen beat his opposite number to score in the corner. This time the boot of Reddish let him down narrowly missing the upright.

The half-time team talk was all about keeping it tight and seeing the game out. Ellon, however had other plans and once the game restarted were soon attacking the Mackie line.

A kick forward had the Mackie back line in all sorts of trouble and a mistake by the full back allowed Ellon to get their first points on the board with the resulting kick scored.

Some valiant defending by Stuart Campbell kept Ellon at bay but not for long. Some great hands by the Ellon backs had their winger score in the corner. Fortunately for Mackie the kick was missed. An injury to captain Pittendreigh led to a reshuffle and Gerry Lock came on to help close the game.

Mackie got themselves on the score sheet once more, this time stand out player Raymond Flourie drove over the line. The tiring Reddish pulled his kick wide.
