Athletic beat Mintlaw in five goal spectacular

Athletic went into this match looking for their second league win of 2013 and aiming to get back into the promotion race.

For this game the home side had their new management team, Stevie Taylor and Ludi Metelski in place with the latter taking his place in central midfield for Athletic.Despite the recent weather, the pitch was in remarkably good condition and the home side went looking for an early breakthrough, with Fraser and Neish causing problems for the visitors.

Mintlaw worked had to keep their goal intact and after 25 minutes the score was still goalless. Athletic finally went ahead just before the half hour mark when Fraser ran clear of the Mintlaw defence before rounding the keeper and slide home from eight yards. Worse was to follow for the visitors when they were reduced to 10 men after 35 minutes, but the referee’s decision to send off their defender seemed very harsh when a booking looked a more appropriate punishment for a late challenge.

Athletic were rarely troubled with Bowron solid and the back and Metelski orchestrating things from midfield but the home side could not increase their lead before the break.

Half time 1 - 0

Athletic started the second half promisingly with some neat passing moves but credit to Mintlaw for their effort in particular their left winger who was causing the home side problems. The home side finally got the all important second goal. Elliott picked up the ball just inside the visitors’ half and as he ran forward he had to option to pass inside to Neish, however he simply looked up and chipped a perfect shot over the advancing keeper from 20 yards.

This second goal allowed Athletic to relax and in the final 25 minutes score three further goals. Neish scored an excellent third goal when he stroked home from a narrow angle and with the game sewn up, Athletic used all five subs and it was veteran striker Cordiner who added number four, placing a great shot from 20 yards low past the keeper. Goal number five came and again it was Neish who was on hand to score from close range.

This result takes Athletic up to 5th place and with 16 league game still to play, promotion must still be their target.

This was a solid performance by Athletic with Bowron controlling the defence and Neish looking sharp up front. The signing of Metelski is a great boost for Athletic and his experience on the park and the training ground will prove invaluable in the second half of the season.
