Bervie travelled to Aberdeen for a cup tie against a Culter side flying high in their league.
Bervie started the match slowly with Smith slow to clear the ball and Culter swinging the ball in dangerously however Webster did well to stretch and block for a corner. Leisk then had to be alert when Avis was out-muscled and the forward got an effort away which Leisk did well to save.
Having seen out the opening pressure Bervie came into the match with Salmond starting to dominate in the centre and he created Bervie’s first chance; feeding Collie who fire his effort just wide. Bervie then had a good shout for a penalty, Montgomerie weaving his way into the box and having his shirt clearly pulled however nothing was given.
Collie then returned the earlier favour receiving the ball and feeding Salmond whose effort went wide. Bervie were awarded a free kick in the full back position, Websters ball forward found Blacklaw who won a corner, his ball across was met by Salmond whose effort was blocked. Salmond then again found Collie who raced through however the keeper just beat him to the ball.
Bervie found themselves behind after conceding a soft free kick, the ball in was missed by Davies and then Sawyer allowing the attacker to drive the ball home to give the home side the lead.
A long ball forward by the home side could have spelt danger for Bervie however a good shout and positioning by Leisk allowed Davies to confidently nod the ball back. Despite appearing the be in control Bervie found themselves two down, Leisk punching a corner clear it wasn’t properly cleared by the defenders who left it to one another and was poked home to double the lead.
Montgomerie was looking the most likely to unlock the home defence and did well to find Avis on the right, however his cross was just too strong, Bervie then went close when Blacklaw’s cross was met by Montgomerie with a diving header however it was blocked. Right on half time it was collie who went close, showing quick feet and shifting the ball to his left his effort whistled narrowly wide.
For the second half Bervie opted for a more attacking line up, switching to 3 at the back and bringing McLaughlin and Anderson on. However within minutes of kick off Bervie conceded a third, a quick throw down Bervie’s right allowed the midfielder to run past Blacklaw and slot home.
Bervie were still trying to play football and Montgomerie did well to find Webster on the left, his ball forward found Blacklaw who won a corner. Blacklaw sent over the corner which was cleared and allowing the forward to run through on the exposed defence and fire him a fourth. Still reeling from these quick fire goals Bervie conceded a fifth when a ball forward found Bervie’s midfield still up the pitch leaving the defence exposed and allowing the forward to fire home from an angle.
Bervie pulled one back when Blacklaw sent the ball over and with the keeper stranded Collie did well to stretch and flick the ball home. However the home side got their 5 goal lead back when Webster failed to clear the ball allowing the winger to cross and Leisk was caught out with a wicked bounce.
Bervie undeterred kept going and Anderson did well to control the ball and feed Blacklaw whose volley was well saved. Bervie did get a second when Culter failed to clear a corner and Montgomerie wriggled past his man and fired home. With the clock ticking down Bervie grabbed a third when the ball was lofted over the top and Blacklaw did well to get infront of his man and slot the ball home.
Although a disappointing result there are a number of positives for Bervie to take from this match, having dominated for long periods the difference was essentially down to players switching off at key points in the match, however it is back to league action next week for Bervie with still plenty to play for.
