Ten man Fettercairn took home the spoils from a keenly contested Piggins Cup final at Broomfield Park on Sunday afternoon with two goal captain Ryan Ritchie’s second half header winning the day.
After a cagey opening Fettercairn took the lead in the 15th minute as Ryan Ritchie headed home Kevin Rennie’s inswinging corner. Fettercairn remained in the ascendancy and netted the goal of the day in the 27th minute as Rennie ran from his own half to smash the goal past Golf Inn keeper Elgin. Half time 2-0.
If the first half belonged to Fettercairn the start of the second was certainly Golf Inn property as they launched a stern comeback. On 48 minutes Fettercairn failed to defend a long ball which resulted in Luke Myers having the simple task of slotting into an empty net. Golf Inn remained on top and had equalised by the hour mark. Kevin Hector swung in a free kick from the left and Sean Mustard rose highest to nod home the equaliser.
There was a touch of déjà vu about the eventual winner in the 72nd minute as Ritchie once again powered home a header from another Rennie corner. Fettercairn were then reduced to ten men shortly after as Kevin Duncan brought down Jack Rodger as he ran in on goal.
Golf Inn keeper Bryce Elgin was forced into a great save from substitute David Robertson as Fettercairn remained a threat on the counter. Golf Inn threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Fettercairn defence without really creating a clear cut chance as the final few minutes plus injury time were seen out. Final score: Golf Inn 2-3 Fettercairn.
Joy for Fettercairn as they enjoyed their second cup final victory of the season while Golf Inn remain very much on course to successfully defend their Montrose and District Welfare League title.
The League would like to thank Montrose Roselea for the use of Broomfield Park and providing the hospitality, the referee and linesmen for officiating and the spectators for turning out on a gloriously sunny Sunday afternoon.
