Newly promoted Brechin City Youths Under 16 team is dominated by Mearns boys with seven of the starting 11 hailing from the Laurencekirk area.
This past week Laurencekirk’s own Cameron Thomson scored the winner.
Brechin fully deserved their second win of the season with a tremendous team performance.
All departments showed strength, determination, and a solid team spirit to carve out a win in this difficult fixture.
The first half was evenly matched with both sides creating chances but unable to convert. Once again, Church-Forbes stood strong in the Brechin goal, behind a solid back four and well coordinated midfield. Thomson (Laurencekirk), playing only his second league game for Brechin, was outstanding - solid in midfield and creating chances for Irvine and Anderson in attack.
The breakthrough came in 20 minutes - a super piece of team play saw Somerville pass a pinpoint ball upfield to Irvine (Laurencekirk) who drove toward goal and sent a low, hard ball across the penalty area where it was met by Thomson - who followed through and beat the keeper with a low drive.
Two minutes later Brechin came close to extending their lead – Irvine (Laurencekirk) picked up the ball in the middle of the Forfar half, turned, and unleashed a thunderous shot from twenty five yards which, with the ‘keeper beaten, skimmed just over the bar.
The last ten minutes saw an increased period of attack from Forfar - desperately trying to pull a goal back - but again the back four of Somerville. Stuart, Bareirro and Campbell (Laurencekirk)stood firm. Church-Forbes also played his part, commanding the goalmouth and confidently working with his defence to maintain a clean sheet.
Final Score Brechin 1- 0 Forfar
