Stoney girls had some pre season friendlies recently

This was a competitive pre-season friendly fought over 3 x thirds with Stoneys large young squad getting much needed experience.

Stoney started strongly with Christie’s mazy dribble and shot sliding narrowly wide. Porter’s pace and power was causing Dundee problems and youngsters McVey, Robertson, Johnston and Evans were effectively keeping Dundee away from Stoney’s goal. When Dundee did get through sweeper Kelly’s pace and the bravery of keeper Ogilvie ensured no way through.

Townsend clipped a 20 yard pass over the Dundee defence and no one was going to catch Porter as she raced onto it to slide it past the keeper for a 1-0 win during that third.

If anything Stoney were even better in the second third. Grundy and Brawley were driving forward on the right and young Fotheringham’s intelligent running linking with the experienced Townsend and Smith caused multiple problems for Dundee. Porter blazed a Townsend pass narrowly wide and then returned the compliment with Townsend dancing onto an inch perfect Porter pass before just failing to score.Add the zest of Veitch and the strength of Simpkin and Dundee had problems. Captain Smith was everywhere and Mackay and Kelly formed an impressive partnership at the back. The second third ended in a draw.

The final third saw a very young Stoney side start and Doyle and McVey were flying into tackles to keep Dundee out. Mainland at full back had the measure of her winger and just as Stoney started to dominate Dundee broke away to slide a shot that finally beat the excellent Ogilvie.Tench led the line well and broke free but couldn’t find the finish.

Trickster Grundy was weaving her way down the right flank and with the athletic skills fo Smith and Townsend in midfield and Christie’s cunning it looked like Stoney were guaranteed goals. Porter was still a real handful and did well to fire a couple of great shots just wide and one off the post after a Townsend, Grundy combo put her in.Just as they pressed Stoney lost a late goal against the run of play to lose the last third 2-0.

All in all an excellent run out against a good young Dundee side ( last seasons Scottish Cup semi finalists). This was made all the better considering Stoney were missing keeper Imray and centre forward Kennedy
