Girls show improvement

Stonehaven Girls U13 1

Elgin City 5

Despite the defeat, this result against the team that has led the league for most of the season highlighted a marked improvement in the play of this developing Stonie team.

Right from the off Stonie tore into the opposition with Laing and Grundy going close. However it took a great save from Holly to keep it level before Elgin’s star midfielder struck a superb opener.

With injuries and tiredness setting in, Elgin added two further goals just before half-time.

Those expecting an Elgin onslaught were proven wrong as Stonie started to dominate possession with Grundy and Mitchell dominating midfield and Townsend and Johnston clearing from defence well.

Elgin scored a fourth against the run of play before Mitchell swung in one of many corners that was helped into the net by an Elgin player.

McVey sent Laing in who forced a great save and Farquhar’s trickery led to many chances for Stonie. Unfortunately a fifth Elgin goal sealed the win.

Near the end Traynor saved well and Mitchell hit both the Elgin post and bar.

Magic moment: The squad spirit which was excellent. Player of the match - all 11 players.

Team: Catriona Holly, Kirsten Johnston, Katy Townsend, Eilidh Mitchell, Ann Laing, Emily Grundy, Brooke Farqhuar. Subs: Molly Mcvey, Emma Christie, Ruahn Stuart and Chelsea Traynor.
