Late goals see Hermes through in Scottish

Stonehaven went into Saturday’s Emirates Scottish Junior Cup second round tie against their Superleague rivals, looking to make amends for the 8-0 hammering suffered in the Grill League Cup at the start of the season.

Stonehaven took an early lead when Horne curled a free kick past Sweeney from the edge of the box.

In 15 minutes, Stonehaven doubled their lead in bizarre fashion. A clearance from Sweeney went as far as Alexander who stroked the ball back into the net from fully 30 yards.

Hermes pulled a goal back just three minutes later. A free kick from the right wasn’t dealt with and it fell to Madle who fired into the top corner.

On the half hour mark Stonehaven should really have had the game out of sight in the space of two minutes. Firstly Martin Shand fired the ball over the bar from just yards out and two minutes later a free kick from Croll found Shand who shot at Sweeney when it looked easier to score.

Five minutes before half-time Hermes were given what seemed to be a very soft penalty when McCall was judged to have brought Madle down in the box. Watson stepped up to make it 2-2

It wasn’t until the 57th minute that Stonehaven had their first effort of the second period. Low picked up the ball down the right and his cross found Glass who fired over the bar.

Smith did well to save Stonehaven in 80 minutes. Wyness broke through but saw his shot well saved by the Stonehaven ‘keeper.

It wasn’t long before Hermes took the lead. Watson scored with a header which just made it across the line and with almost the last kick of the ball Middleton struck a free kick from almost the half way line which eluded Smith.
